It’s been a hard first summer for Boris…

Just finished this digital painting/sketch of my two dogs, Boris and Reggie. I’m thinking it would be fun to do a series of these. I spend a lot of time with them, watching and being entertained by their antics, so a series of paintings seems like a low-risk, high-return proposition.
Additionally, I’m itching to do some traditional painting again. I’ve got a ton of blotter paper that, with a coating of gesso, could work well as a base for the series. I think after a couple more digital sketches, I’ll dive into the traditional media. I see these paintings working well in watercolor or even oils. Could be fun.

They are awesome!
Dropping from 10,000ft, they glide in order to land unnoticed. The dogs often carry cameras and are trained to attack anyone carrying a weapon.
“Dogs don’t perceive height difference, so that doesn’t worry them. They’re more likely to be bothered by the roar of the engines, but once we’re on the way down, that doesn’t matter and they just enjoy the view,” said the dog handler. “It’s something he does a lot. He has a much cooler head than most recruits.”
Commandos from 14 countries, including British special forces and Royal Marines, took part in the Nato exercise. The use of dogs in High Altitude High Opening missions was pioneered by America’s Delta Force, which trained the animals to breathe through oxygen masks during the jump.
We try to teach our dogs their proper place in the hierarchy around here, but mostly we just end up sitting on the floor.

The old gal on the right is Reggie. She’s 10 years old and a real sweetie at 50 lbs.
The youngster on the left is Boris. He’s 18 weeks and 50 lbs. at least. Looking at the size of his feet, he’s got a bit more growing to do.

We spent 12 hours (almost to the minute) in the car Saturday on a round trip to Everett to pick up the newest member of our family.

Supposedly, he is the offspring of an English Mastiff female and a Labrador Retriever male. Clearly the Lab portion is dominant at this stage. He is eight weeks old, and roughly 12 pounds. His feet are large, and his frame is very stout, so we expect him to grow to at least 100 pounds (and I’m hoping for 150 or more).
We are currently working on house-training, and getting him accustomed to his new home and identity. At the same time, he is currently working on eliminating unnecessary clutter and unworn shoes from our home.
He loves Reggie. She’s not so sure about him, but she’s being a good sport about it.

UPDATE: Check the blog for more photos. Also, we’ve been updated by the vet that Boris will probably be over 100 lbs., but that’s about it. Not bad.
Even dogs love their veterans.

The dog, I mean. Chirac can go to hell.
But even more, it’s where we can find Upside Down Dogs.
